A Tree Grows in Brooklyn

by

Betty Smith

A Tree Grows in Brooklyn was written in 1943 as a semi-autobiographical novel. It chronicles the life of Francie Nolon growing up in Brooklyn, New York, in the early 1900s. This book was chosen to be a part of a
group of books published for American soldiers during World War II. The books were printed in a small paperback format that would be easy to carry. Francie, her brother, and her parents are poor and have many struggles such as alcoholism. You will develop a sense of wonder at Francie’s ability to overcome such obstacles. Life as it was in Brooklyn is depicted. It became very popular with the soldiers who read this book. It provided them with memories from home as well as not losing hope in the most difficult situations.
